Information
Nørrebro - the Bronx of Copenhagen
we visit the beautiful Assistens Cemetery placed as a green oasis among the busy bustle of the city. Here you can find some of the most famous Danes such as HC Andersen, Kierkegaard and Niels Bohr buried and we tell why there is a Russian burial ground….. Leaving the Cemetery takes us straight into one of the most vibrant and cool streets of Nørrebro “ Little Notting Hill” where you can shop handmade arts and crafts and gourmet food. Moving on to Nørrebroparken and Superkilen we will meet the whole world through the inspiring project created to make the urban park a colourful playground for everyone. Have a go on one of the red swings from Bagdad og discover the manhole covers from Gdansk, before you spot a piece of art made up of weapons !
Christianshavn - picturesque with a free spirit
It takes 4 generations to be considered a native of the neighbourhood Christianshavn, and “Christianshavners” don’t feel a part of the rest of Copenhagen. The sense of independence is very tangible in this area - it is also here you find the Freetown of Christiania, a community within the community so to speak. Originally built as a defence barrier to protect Copenhagen, it also served as a new opportunity to expand the growing city. Quickly it became home to seafarers and merchants who benefitted from the trade by the many canals where ships brought whale meat, spices, exotic fruits and china into Copenhagen. Come on the tour to get the stories of slum and poverty and how it transformed into a bohemian and trendy neighbourhood. On this walk we go into backyards and see how urban life can feel like a small village, with hollyoaks, terraces, and idyllic private gardens.
Vesterbro - Urban and vibrant
Copenhagen is a mix of small neighbourhoods with their own atmosphere and touch. Join us on a walk to the hip urban and very colourful part, called Vesterbro. You will hear stories about the people who lived here. It’s unique history, where we will walk by some of the iconic areas that made this neighbourhood such a melting pot. The Meatpacking District This is the place of the meatpacking district. Once a vibrant busy workplace for the butchers of Copenhagen with the hustle and bustle in the slaughterhouses. We will tell you about the transformation into the trendy and youthful hangout venue it has become today. This is also where you find the original Mikkeller Bar, War Pigs, where you can taste the newest flavours from their brand. From Down & Out to Hip and Hot Once a working class area with poor housing and overpopulation. Vesterbro had a bad reputation, until the biggest urban renewal planning began in the 1990’s. Still home to the singles and the young, the transformation is easy to spot: trendy cafés, cool vintage stores and tasty eateries. Here we will mingle among the new locals – the hipsters. Istedgade – we will never surrender! Istedgade is one of the main streets characterising this neighbourhood – this is where life is lived on the street and where everybody knew who you were. Hear the story about the Danish resistance during WW2 and how Istedgade gathered the locals in a main strike against the Nazis.
